Task 2 Questions 7-15
Read the text about an ice hotel and decide whether the statements about the text are
true (T), false (F), or there is no information (NI). Tick (√) the right box. An example
(0) has been done for you.
Arctic Ice Hotel
Located 125 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, Jukkasjärvi is a window
into Europe’s last great wilderness area. The vast northern land has crystal blue lakes,
mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, fast rivers, and extensive forests. Lapland is a vast
region of land that extends across the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland,
and Russia. Swedish Lapland occupies about half the entire landmass of Sweden.
Swedes know the area as Norrland.
The famous Ice Hotel is rebuilt every year and is open from December till
April. The peak season is mid-January to April. The hotel is demolished in May.
Everything in the hotel is made from ice, including coffee tables, chandeliers,
glasses, and even the beds. Guests are provided with cold weather suits and sleeping
bags. Beds are draped with reindeer skins to keep you warm at night.
Ice is cut using a special ice saw. It normally takes 6-8 weeks to complete the
construction. Some 30,000 tonnes of packed snow and 1,200 tonnes of ice are used.
Once built the hotel maintains a constant interior temperature of –5 to –7C.
There is no heating in the hotel. Warmth is maintained by burning candles and
through the body heat of guests and staff. Clothing is important. You will need robust
outdoor clothes that can cope with snow and cold weather. Thermal underwear, jeans,
pants, winter jackets, hats, socks, and hiking boots are all essential.
The single storey hotel can accommodate 100 people. Most rooms are of
standard design and can sleep between four and eight people. The floor plan normally
includes a bar, sauna, restaurant, and a chapel – popular for weddings and
christenings.
The only thing lacking is bathroom facilities. These are located in an adjoining
building. Despite what would appear to be physical privations, the Ice Hotel last year
attracted 3,000 guests and over 20,000 visitors.
But if you’re not up to sleeping on an ice bed you can stay at the nearby
Wardshuset Inn, a traditional guesthouse which operates all year round. And don’t
worry about the Ice Hotel collapsing around your ears. The construction has been
approved by the Swedish military – their rocket-propelled grenades had little impact
on the wall.
The hotel can arrange plenty of daytime activities, including snowmobiling,
dog sledging, and skiing.

The Biggest Bird
The biggest bird of all is the ostrich. It can weigh 300 pounds or more. It
grows to be about eight feet tall.
The ostrich is incapable of flying. There are other birds that cannot fly – emus
of Australia, rheas of South America, and kiwis of New Zealand. Scientists think the
ancestors of these birds millions of years ago were smaller and flew like other birds.
But most of the giant nonflying birds today live on islands where they have few
enemies. Because no danger threatened them, they had no need to fly. Over millions
of years, these kinds of birds grew bigger and heavier and their wings became weaker.
The ostrich, which lives on the African plains, does have hungry enemies such
as lions and cheetahs. But the ostrich can run fifty miles an hour, faster than most of
its enemies. Besides, the ostrich is so tall and has such sharp eyesight that it can see
danger from far off. In fact, zebras often stay near an ostrich and use it as a lookout.
When it runs, they run.
The ostrich lays the biggest egg in the world today. Its egg measures six to
nine inches long and weighs about three pounds. If it were empty, it could hold the
insides of about eighteen chicken eggs. The shell of a bird’s egg must be strong
enough to hold the developing baby bird. It must also be thin enough so that the chick
growing inside can breathe.

Task 1 Questions 1-9
Read the article about panda babies and answer the questions that follow the text. An example (0)
has been done for you.
Panda Babies Offer Hope
It’s been a great summer for panda fans.
Eight baby pandas were born in China in
early August—hopeful news for a species
threatened with extinction.
In the first two weeks of August
2000, four panda mothers at China's
Wolong Panda Reserve produced a total
of six tiny panda babies. During the same
time, a panda named Lele at the Beijing
Zoo had twins. No one knows how many
pandas might have been born in the wild.
Baby pandas are amazingly small.
Each cub weighs only about 3½ ounces
(100 grams) at birth. No other mammal
gives birth to a baby so much smaller than
the adult of its species.
A panda mother must carry her baby
around very gently and take care of it until
it is big enough to move around on its
own. Pandas are known for being very
careful and protective mothers. With such
tiny babies, they have to be!
Newborn pandas cry for milk about
every two hours. Between feedings, a
panda mother will rarely put her baby
down. When sitting, the mother holds the
tiny creature in her paw. When she is on
the move, she carries the baby gently in
her mouth. Panda cubs can walk on their
own when they are about three months
old.
Between the ages of 12 months and
18 months, a panda cub will gain nearly
100 pounds and grow the strong teeth it
needs to eat bamboo. When a panda is
about 18 months old, it is ready to be on
its own. At this time it will leave its
mother to make a home for itself alone.
Pandas spend most of their time
alone. They really don't have much time to
socialise, because in the wild these slowmoving
animals spend about 14 hours a
day eating bamboo.

C. What was life like then?

E. What are his most famous works?
F. Was Shakespeare a highly-educated man?
G. What happened to the Globe?
H. What were theatres like in Elizabethan times?
For the

+/-
(0) …E….. Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado
About Nothing - he wrote a lot.
(1) ………. It was built on the Thames Bankside where there was a lot of gambling
and low-life. The theatre was built from wood that used to be in the Shoreditch
Theatre but after an argument Shakespeare and friends dismantled the theatre
beam by beam and built the Globe where most of his plays were performed.
(2) ………. Most of them were germ-ridden flea-pits. Due to the fleas there were
often outbreaks of the plague that started in theatres. If more than 40 people died
the theatres would be temporarily shut. They were also full of vice and crime.
Many employers disapproved of them because people went to the theatre instead
of work.
(3) ……….. Some last up to three hours but there is a company called the Reduced
Shakespeare Company that has shortened his plays and they perform all 36 of his
plays in an hour. It’s very amusing!
(4) ……….. A sequence of good things followed by bad things; the roof caught fire
and the whole theatre burned down. Luckily it was rebuilt. Unluckily it was then
closed down by puritans and subsequently demolished. The entire theatre was
then rebuilt in the 1990s and audiences can once again watch Shakespeare’s plays
in a similar theatre to the one they were written for.
(5) ……… In Elizabethan times people enjoyed quite blood-thirsty entertainment –
they attended public executions, bear-baiting, and cock-fighting. However, unlike
today in Britain, a large percentage of the population went to the theatre very
frequently. It was a major place to congregate. Where you were allowed to sit
depended on your social status. Also, there were no actresses, the parts of females
were played by men. All actors were paid next to nothing.
(6) ………. Actually not much is known about him. His parents weren’t hugely
wealthy and young William Shakespeare did not receive much of an education. In
fact, some people say it is almost impossible that he wrote the plays because they
use such a wide vocabulary. People can’t work out how Shakespeare’s
vocabulary got so large. This is why it has been said someone else wrote them.

ancestors of these birds millions of years ago were smaller and flew like other birds.
